Merlstead House, Hornsea Review

Wednesday 12 June 2019

It doesn't matter how crazy or quiet our lives are, sometimes it is nice just to get away, even just overnight. I live in East Yorkshire and the nearest major seaside towns to me are Bridlington and Scarborough, although even those are quite a trek. So I had a look on Google Maps and the seaside town of Hornsea was only about 40 minutes away, which I thought was ideal.
So I popped on to Booking.com to see what the accommodation was like in the area. Nothing really caught my eye until I happened upon Merlstead House. The pictures of the room looked gorgeous and the reviews were glowing, and at £65.00 per night, I didn't think that too bad for an overnight stay in a seaside town.
Check in was at 4pm, so I popped to the Hornsea Freeport Shopping Area, which in all honesty I didn't think much to, and then went and parked on the seafront. Parking for all day was just £2.90 and there were plenty of spaces. I took a lovely walk down the seafront and as the weather wasn't too bad, I managed to go and sit on the beach for a bit and enjoy the peace and quiet. I did try dipping my toes in the sea, but it was bloody freezing! This was then followed by fish and chips of course at a lovely restaurant called Sullivans. Delish!
One of the joint owners of Merlstead House, Sarah texted me to see if I would like to get access to my room earlier, which was really kind and so I managed to go check in. Merlstead House is a two minute (if that) walk from the seafront, and you can see the sea from right outside the house, so it was a lovely view. On arrival, both Sarah and her husband welcomed me, and took me to my room. I say a room, but it is more a little apartment and I could easily move in immediately!
There is a large main room, with a huge super king bed, a sofa, a table and two chairs, a huge TV, and then another door opens to a dressing room area, which comes complete with a gorgeous dressing table, stand alone mirror and mini fridge. Another door then opens and gives way to a lovely clean and fresh bathroom which has the usual toilet, sink and large shower.
As well as the beautiful wallpaper and decor, what struck me most was the attention to detail that was so obviously important to Sarah and Paul and for me, that makes all the difference. There was a wooden stand with two wine glasses, along with glass bottles of orange and lemon cordials, a table full of a Nespresso machine and capsules, serviettes, cutlery, biscuits, a kettle, and tea and sugar etc, but there was also an entire homemade lemon drizzle cake sat there waiting for me. (You can take this home too). There were plenty of fresh towels, a dressing gown, little glass bottles of fresh orange and milk in the mini fridge along with two bottles of water. Underneath the mini fridge, there were an assortment of cereals and dishes etc for you to help yourself to in the morning.
The dressing table housed a hairdryer, and also a huge floor fan in case the room was too hot. In the bathroom, there were hand soaps, guest soaps, and shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. You didn't need for anything. After tea time, it had started to rain, and so I got cosy on the sofa with a blanket and switched on the TV, which has Netflix which you can sign into with your own account, and so I enjoyed watching a film before showering and getting into bed.
I am not a great sleeper, but I slept so well in that huge comfortable bed that I didn't want to get up. Everything at Merlstead House is done to the highest of standards, and the attention to detail and care that has gone into the room is second to none. I would go back in a heartbeat, and at £65.00, I personally would say they are undercharging for the room, but we will keep that a secret so that I can go more often haha.
Paul and Sarah are currently renovating a further two rooms, so right now there is just this one room readily available on Booking.com, but there will be two new ones so keep an eye out for those. I managed to get a sneak peek of one of the new rooms, which has the most stunning Orla Kiely theme and I can't wait to see how they are both finished off.
You can find out availability for Merlstead House online at Booking.com here and check out their Facebook page here.

All the Loves,
