My Typology Skincare Routine - Review

Monday 3 May 2021

 This post contains gifted products.

Typology is a radical new French skincare brand that was created by founder Ning Li, who wanted to offer consumers a premium natural skincare brand using the highest quality ingredients at a great price. Typology do not add anything to their products to make them stand out, and instead pare them back and distil each formula down to the most essential, natural active ingredients. Their formulas are simple yet effective and are 100% French, and today I am going to share some of my favourites with you.

Starting with the Typology 7 Ingredient Makeup Removing Oil* (£14.90 for 100ml), this cleansing oil has a fragrance-free formula and is therefore suitable for all skin types, including sensitive. The formula contains 99% naturally-derived ingredients and it comes in a simple, clean bottle with a semi-closed lid so that you can control the amount of product you are using. For my skincare routine, I apply this straight onto the skin to break away makeup and dirt that has built up on the skin throughout the day, I then add a little water and massage into my skin, rinsing thoroughly with water afterwards. I often find cleansing oils the most effective at removing makeup, and this formula is so nourishing that it not just rids my skin of makeup and oil, but it also keeps it feeling super soft and smooth.

Because I am a stickler for double cleansing - the first cleanse to remove my makeup, the second to cleanse the skin, I then use the Typology Hydrating Cleansing Bar with Palmarosa* (£9.90 for 100g). This is a hydrating face and body soap that contains 8% fatty acids, and 100% naturally derived ingredients that is suitable for all skin types, but especially beneficial for dry skin. The formula contains organic Palmarosa Essential Oil to promote skin regeneration, organic Exotic Verbena Essential Oil to cleanse and purify the skin and organic Lemongrass Essential Oil to add a delightful fresh citrus scent that doesn't aggravate sensitive skin. As I mentioned, this can be used on the face or body, and is therefore an excellent travel essential for all of those upcoming staycations. Some soaps can dry out the skin, but due to the natural ingredients and essential oils, I find this very moisturising and it helps keep my skin lovely and smooth.

For toner, I have been using the Typology Exfoliating Toner Glycolic Acid 8% + Lemongrass Extract* (£20.80 for 215ml), an active-rich toner that has been created to exfoliate the skin, tighten pores and reduce blackheads. The formula contains Glycolic Acid, Lemongrass Hydrolate and Botanical Glycerin and is 90% naturally derived. This exfoliating and astringent toner, with an acidic pH similar to the skin's, works to rebalance the skin's pH after cleansing. It also removes the limestone and mineral residues present in tap water that find their way on to the skin during cleansing. Concentrated in exfoliating active ingredients, this toner refines skin texture and eliminates dead skin cells so that the skin is a lot more even, brighter and healthier. To use, you soak a cotton pad with the lotion and then apply it to clean skin after cleansing and before serums and moisturiser.

As someone with fairly noticeable pores, I have been enjoying the Typology Organic Peppermint Hydrolate* (£9.40 for 100ml). This is a gentle essence to purify the skin and relieve inflammation as well as minimising pores, and so not only does it help reduce the size of my pores, it also helps to calm any redness on my skin. This nutrient-rich floral water is suitable for combination, oily and acne-prone skin, as well as being suitable for sensitive skin that is prone to scarring, hyperpigmentation or other visible reactions. I tend to use this both morning and evening, after toning and before a serum or moisturiser and I have definitely noticed a difference with the tone of my skin, it is a lot less uneven and my redness has impressively reduced.

Moving on to serum, we have the Typology Hyaluronic Acid 3% + B5 2% Serum* (£11.90 for 15ml), which comes in a little glass bottle with a glass dropper so that you can control the amount of product you are using. This active-rich serum has been formulated to rehydrate and plump dried skin, by using a high concentration of hyaluronic acid to effectively keep water locked into the skin. Suitable for all skin types, even sensitive skin, you take a few drops into the palm of your hands and then gently massage into clean, dry skin both morning and night to keep the skin super hydrated and plumped up, so that your skin both looks and feels healthier without the need for botox! The formula is almost gel-like in its consistency and I find it very cooling and soothing on my dry, red-prone skin.

Containing 98% naturally-derived ingredients, the Typology Nourishing Face Moisturiser* (£21.90 for 50ml) is an active-rich moisturiser that is going to help restore suppleness and comfort to dry, tight skin. Suitable for all skin types, especially dry, normal and combination, it comes in a squeezy tube, so that you don't have to keep putting your fingertips in a jar, and just a small amount is enough to moisturise the skin both morning and night after using a serum. The Nourishing Face Moisturiser reduces the appearance of fine lines cased by dehydration, and key ingredients include hyaluronic acid to keep moisture locked into the skin, squalene to nourish the skin and shea butter to keep the skin soft and supple. The formula is a medium weight, and so it does an excellent job of nourishing the skin, without feeling too heavy for during the day, and there is no greasiness or residue left over, so you can apply makeup over the top without it breaking up due to a heavy moisturiser.

Due to the cold weather we have continuously had over the past few months, my skin has been super dry and so I have been incorporating a night time treatment so further hydrate and protect my skin. The Typology Hydrating Night Serum Botanical Blend with Papyrus* (£21.80 for 15ml) contains papyrus, borage and squalene oils to boost, hydrate and regenerate the skin whilst you sleep. Cell renewal and repair peaks overnight and so this is when the skin is most receptive to active ingredients. This dry oil allows for better absorption of those ingredients whilst you sleep and as it sinks into the skin immediately, it leaves a silky finish without any oily residue. As this is an evening-specific product, I do of course only use this on an evening, in place of my regular serum, adding a few drops to the palms of my hands and rubbing them together to warm up the blend, pressing into the skin and then using upward circular motions to massage the product into the skin. This is also suitable for all skin types, but especially beneficial for dry and dehydrated skin.

Finally, for the eyes, I have been enjoying the Typology Eye Serum Caffeine Serum* (£12.50 for 15ml), which comes in a little glass bottle with a pipette applicator. This Serum is concentrated in decongesting actives to reduce the appearance of dark circles and undereye bags for a more luminous appearance. This Eye Serum is effective at combating vascular dark circles, characterised by dark purplish pigmentation of the lower eyelids due to poor blood circulation and the thinness of the skin in the area and as someone who has naturally dark circles, I have found this particularly effective to reduce them make my eye area look all together brighter and more hydrated. You simple massage a couple of drops on the undereye area both morning and evening and use for a minimum of four weeks to get the best results.
