Trying Out Rare Beauty - UK Review + Swatches

Wednesday 2 June 2021

Over the past few years there have been quite a lot of celebrities releasing makeup and skincare brands, but one that always stood out to me is Selena Gomez's makeup brand Rare Beauty as the products, shade range and packaging looked gorgeous. I was waiting to see if they would be released here in the UK, but so far, nearly a year later, we haven't yet had it available over here. Not one to miss out, I decided to order through a website called London Loves Beauty. They do put quite a premium on their prices, and I certainly wouldn't buy anything on there that I could get here in the UK, and so bare in mind that the products would be cheaper to buy through Rare Beauty, but I really was excited to try the brand, so I decided to bite the bullet!

They didn't have the full collection, but the first product I bought is the Rare Beauty Always An Optimist Illuminating Primer (£39.95 for 28ml). The Primer comes in a light nude plastic bottle with a pump applicator for easy distribution and this is a weightless, silicone-free, gel primer that is enriched with ultra-fine pearls for a lit-from-within glow. It feels lovely and lightweight on the skin, and I like that it has that glow rather than shimmer on the complexion. It isn't especially pore-blurring or smoothing like a silicone primer, but that isn't its claims, but it does add a very pretty, natural luminosity to the skin and my foundation applies beautifully over the top. Sometimes, I even wear this on its own without foundation, just to add that natural glow to my skin when I want a makeup-free day.

The Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation (£42.00 for 30ml) is available in 48 shades, which I find incredible for a brand new beauty brand! As I clearly had to take a gamble, I chose the shade 140C, which is for light skin with cool beige undertones. I didn't want to go too pink or yellow because I didn't know the formula. The Foundation comes in a plastic frosted bottle and has a doe-foot applicator similar to the Tarte Shape Tape Concealer, which is so quick and easy for applying the product onto the skin. The formula is lightweight and dries down to a natural, skin-like finish so it isn't heavy or cakey, and I like the fact that it is buildable, so if I want something a little lighter one day and more full coverage the next, I can do that with this product. I found that this evened out my skin tone really well and didn't clog my pores at all, but instead smoothed them out and the formula lasted all day without disappearing into the skin or transferring. I currently have fair to light skin, and the shade 140C works well for me now, but come Summer, I would definitely have to go for a deeper shade.

For the Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Brightening Concealer (£34.95 for 7.5ml), I also opted for the same shade 140C, as again because I didn't know the formula, I didn't wait to go too far or too dark. As with the Foundation, there are 48 shades of the Concealer available, and so I think if/when Rare Beauty comes to the UK, you are really going to be able to choose a perfect match for both. Again the packaging is very aesthetically pleasing, and is a plastic bottle with a very unique shaped applicator - I have never seen an applicator like it, but I really love it - it is angled and so you can carve out the brows, apply to smaller areas and of course conceal undereye circles with it. The Concealer formula has a medium buildable coverage and a radiant, skin-like finish and can cover blemishes, dark circles, redness, fine lines and more and whilst it is creamy and hydrating, it lasts all day long and is sweat-resistant too. As I am 37, and I do have the odd fine line around my eyes, I have noticed that as I get older, I struggle to find a concealer that doesn't settle into those lines, but this one works like a dream.

I picked up a couple of blush products as I couldn't decide which one to get, so the first is the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Matte Liquid Blush (£34.95 for 7.5ml) in the shade Bliss, a matte nude pink. There are eight shades available in a mixture of matte and dewy finishes, but as I have texture on my cheeks, I decided to go for a matte shade. The Soft Pinch Blushes come in a plastic tube with a gold lid and then another completely unique sponge applicator - this one has been created for easily applying the formula onto the apples of the cheeks. The formula is super lightweight and blends easily into the skin without that powdery finish and a little goes a long way. For a monochromatic look, you could also apply to the lips and eyelids. I tried this Blush over the top of both powder and liquid complexion products, and it worked really well over both.

The second blush I ordered is the Rare Beauty Stay Vulnerable Melting Blush (£34.95 for 5g) in the shade Nearly Apricot, a peachy nude. There are five shades to choose from and they come in the cutest soft pink compact with a little mirror on the inside of the lid. This unique liquid-like cream melts onto the skin for a weightless wash of colour that lasts all day long, and just like the Liquid Blush, you could easily use this on the lips and eyes too. The formula combines pigments with a non-greasy blend of lightweight oils and spherical powders for the most natural, beautiful finish. As I mentioned, I do have texture on my cheeks, but this goes on seamlessly and provides me with a natural satin finish with a soft blurring effect.

I then chose the Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer (£29.95 for 15ml) in the shade Enchant, which is the prettiest soft pink. There are eight shades available, ranging from a lighter one than this to a deep bronze, so there is something for all skin tones. It comes in a plastic bottle with the same flocked applicator as the Liquid Blush, so you can apply it straight onto the face or apply a little to the hand and then blend it into the skin using your fingertips. This weightless, liquid formula blends super easily onto the skin and gives that beautiful radiance without looking shimmery or glittery, It contains superfine, light-catching pearls and as it is a buildable formula, you can go from a soft sheen to a really popping highlight in seconds. I find that it doesn't settle into fine lines, nor does it accentuate the texture on my cheeks and it layers easily over liquids, powders and creams without removing what is underneath.

The first of the two newest products is the Rare Beauty Always An Optimist Weightless Eye Primer (£26.95 for 3.0ml). As this is an eyeshadow primer, there is just one shade available at the moment and the product comes in a cool frosted plastic bottle with a neat, petite applicator. This lightweight, creamy primer provides instant hydration to the eyelids, so it is slightly cooling upon application and it quickly dries down to a seamless, smooth base ready for eyeshadow application. The slightly tinted peach shades helps colours pop and keep your eye shadow in place all day long, without your eye makeup creasing, fading or smudging. I have quite hooded eyelids and I found that this product ensures eyeshadow doesn't get into my creases.

The final product I chose is the Rare Beauty Discovery True To Myself Eyeshadow Palette (£39.95), which comes in the most beautiful packaging with a mirror on the inside of the lid. This mixture of warm neutrals features mattes, satins, metallics and glitters and so even though there are just seven shades, you can really create so many different looks depending on your mood and outfit. The shades included are Undeniable, a matte purple taupe, Genuine, a matte peach, Passionate, a duo-chrome magenta gold, Accepting, a glittering rose to bronze, Loyal, a matte warm brown, Positive, a metallic pink champagne and Pure, a metallic true gold. The formulas are buttery soft and apply easily to the lids with slight to no fall out and each shadow is easy to blend, as well as being crease and fade resistant. I really am now obsessed with this brand, and I would absolutely love to try out more products, so I really do hope Rare Beauty is brought across to the UK soon.

You can find London Loves Beauty here and Rare Beauty here.

I just wanted to give an example of the price difference buying through a retailer such as London Loves Beauty, so that you don't think Rare Beauty is overpriced. The concealer retails for £34.95 on London Loves Beauty, but in America, it costs $19.00, which works out at around £13.50. Yes, I overpaid hugely for these products, and normally I would want until I went to America, but with Covid happening I knew I wouldn't be able to go any time soon.
